Nossa Senhora da Ajuda Mount

Santa Cruz da Graciosa

Information

It is from the Nossa Senhora da Ajuda Mount that one has the most delightful view over the beautiful village of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, capital of the wonderful Graciosa Island, on the greenish Azores Archipelago.

Located at 280 meters high above the sea level, the village of Santa Cruz da Graciosa was developed around the Mount, due to its great location, towering above the ocean and the island, and also sheltered from rough winds, as well as the proximity to fertile soils.

Nowadays are still visible the Chapels of the Mount, built on the higher points of the Mount: the 16th century Nossa Senhora da Ajuda Chapel, the 18th century São Salvador Chapel and the São João Chapel, probably dated from the 16th century.

This is an area of Nature Special Protection, housing all the volcanic cone of the Ajuda Mount above the 30 meters high, nowadays almost all forested, offering amazing landscapes of great natural beauty.
