Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção ( Messejana )

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção in Messejana dates from the XVI century, and has the characteristics of the "Brazilian churches". It was built by Portuguese immigrants who, returning to their homeland, brought with them traces of the new culture.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção is part of an old set of eleven existing churches and is located in the countryside, outside the town of Messejana.

Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Our Lady of the Assumption) is the patron saint of the village church, and its annual festival is on August 15, the day when the Saint leaves the chapel, being carried in shoulders by the streets of the Village.

After returning the Saint to the chapel, the festival continues in the arena with the traditional bullfights.
