Peso, also known as Santa Maria Madalena do Peso, is a traditional mountainside small village, nearby Covilhã, situated on the beautiful right bank of the Zêzere river.

The village is located in a region blessed by nature, just by the wide Estrela Mountain.

For many years the village kept is traditional rural feature, nevertheless some industries have been created in the region, developing along with the Estrela’s Mountain growth, specialized mainly in textiles, woods and bread.

Peso is proud of its natural, social and architectonic heritage, with highlights such as the Mother Church of the 12th century (yet, much altered afterwards), the Espírito Santo and Senhor dos Passos Chapels, or the Mergulho Fountain and the charming small fountain.

Quite interesting is the Nossa Senhora de La Salette Sanctuary, outside the village centre, located in a lovely hill. The set has a bandstand, a viewpoint, a 1864 chapel, and a small chapel. The all set suffered some damages over the years and was restored in the 1960’s. Here, every second Sunday of September take place the Festivities in homage to the Saint, quite popular in the region.
