Monforte's Old Bridge

Situated in the Monforte department, in the vast Alentejo region, this lovely Monument over the Monforte stream show off the rich history of the region, in a place of peace of mind and great natural beauty.

This bridge is commonly named as “Roman”, yet several architectonic details indicate a more recent construction, probably built over a previous construction and re-utilizing previous materials. It is known that this monument already existed in 1321, as it is described in documents of that period.

The bridge would have been constituted by twelve arches, yet nowadays only shows seven unequal arches.

The Monforte bridge is classified as a Public interest Building since the 17th July 1990.
