Vera Cruz Fort

The ruins of the Vera Cruz Fort are located on the top of the hill that bounds on the eastern side with Figueira Beach.

This Fort was probably built after the year 1640. It likely had Barracks and two Batteries (a higher and a lower one) where was the artillery, usually with four mouths of fire.

In the night of 04 of May of 1670 some Pirates from the North of Africa disembarked close by. Their goal was to loot the village. Nevertheless the attacking group was defeated by the inhabitants, led by a local: Afonso Telo.
