Guia Fortress

Information

Guia Fortress was built between 1622 and 1638.
Inside the fortress is Guia Chapel, originally created by St. Clare, who resided at the site before establishing the Convent of Santa Clara.
Elaborate frescoes of the chapel show representations of western and Chinese themes, motifs of mythological and religious inspiration that are a perfect example of multicultural dimension of Macau.
The Guia Lighthouse, dating from 1865, which is also located within the perimeter, is the first modern lighthouse on the Chinese coast. It has 91 meters high, and has a light visible for about 20 miles in good weather.

Guia Fortress, along with the chapel and lighthouse are symbols of Macao shipping, past military and missionary.

This complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Centre of Macau.
