Faro Cathedral

Faro

Information

The Faro Cathedral started to be built in the end of the 13th century.
In the 15th century the Cathedral suffered some alterations, such has the construction of two Gothic Chapels and a new floor on the Tower next to the main facade.
In 1596 with the invasion of the English troops, which looted and set on fire the city, a reconstruction of the Church was needed. Again, in 1755, with the big earthquake the Cathedral got very damaged.
The Faro Cathedral is one of the most sumptuous monuments of Vila Adentro ("Inside Town", the old Faro city centre), generously decorated with gilded wood-work, marble inlaid work, ceramic tiles panels, paintings and sculptures.
