guide to visit

Manteigas

Situated at about 700 meter high, in a glacier valley of Estrela Mountain Range, where the River Zêzere runs, the Manteigas village is widely known for its textile industry and, nowadays, for its tourism development, due to the growing importance of Tourism in this area.
This is a region of extremely beautiful and natural landscape, with astonishing landscapes all over, that have provided throughout the centuries this territory with the necessary resources for the manufacture of its typical products: wool for its famous textiles and milk for the illustrious Cheese.
The monuments in Manteigas are worth to be seen, with a rich history, as the Santa Maria (the oldest in the village), the São Pedro and the Misericórdia Churches and the long list of Chapels (Senhor do Calvário, São Lourenço, São Gabriel, Santa Luzia, among many others) and the Casa das Obras Manor House, which construction was from 1770 until the beginning of the 19th century.
The natural heritage of this region is absolutely astonishing, with fabulous places like Poço do Inferno with a lovely waterfall that sometimes, during winter months, has the water transformed into ice, the Zêzere River Valley, the Penhas da Saúde, among many other beautiful sights worth to be known.
